Does anyone know the thermal equivalent (in terms of inches of insulation) provided by boarding in the loft? I have put down 18mm chipboard over the old 4-inch insulation between the joists and do not fancy ripping the boards up again to increase the insulation to the now-recommended 10 inches.

I believe its about the equivalent of 6mm of insulation.. there abouts. in thermal terms

If you have an usually spacious loft, it is possible to lay expanded polystyrene slabs over the existing boarding, and board again over that.

But I would prob just take up the old boards, counterbatten to give extra depth, add another layer of insulation, and relay the old boards.
