I am going to board my loft out for storage purposes and have ordered my tg chipboard 8ft x 2ftx18mm. What my question is am I right in saying every end of the boards does not have to land on a joist. As the next boards locks in so if the two what meet are in between joist they wont fall in will they ?

Sorry if that sound jargon.

The boards should join over a joist, unless you want to end up in the bedroom below.

Yes, the boards will interlock, but the support is 4mm of chipboard. If you bang your foot down on an unsupported joint, then it may go through

If you glue all the joints, and are not too heavy footed, then it may be OK, but try and join on a joist.

Will do. But the boards might not alway land on a joist. Will they ? If I start the first board on a joist then put the next one down it might not be on a joist.

having a square-edge joint over a joist will be far stronger than a T&G hanging in the air.

How about fitting some 3x2 cross sections between the joists (noggins) where it comes to a joint for support.

Would be much easier to join it on a joist though, the lip is not needed then.
