I have a Ideal Mexico Super RS460 the piliot light is on, the boiler fires up once the temperature reaches the set level eg level 3, it shuts down and won't relight automatically. I have to turn it all off and leave it for about 10 miniutes and then try to relight it. Anyone have any ideas what this problem could be? Don't mind paying a professional to fix the boiler, but would like to know what is at fault, has i have been caught in the past.

Most people who say that on this forum ask for the information because they want to repair it themselves!

They have even got to the site by searching on DIY !

I have a very good idea of whats wrong but I think your professional should be left to diagnose the fault himself.

Would you like to explain just how "you have been caught" ?

I don't know the boiler so I personally cant give advise on your problem but I don't think someone pointing him in the general idea is a problem just so a "rouge" plumber doesn't try to "catch him out again"

What happens if you leave it a while without turning it off?

Have you checked your pump?

Is the system full of water and the exp tank full?

Is there any difference if you set the boiler stat to different settings?

I've just got in from work and been told by the wife that she called a plumber out today ( he's a friend of a friend ). He's looked at the boiler and has said it's the ignition electrode what ever that is ? he's had to order the part and will be back tommorrow to fit it. As for being caught I once was charged by a plumber at my old house £240 for him to supply and to fit a part which i found out later only cost £20 which only took 5 minutes to fit. i dont know what anyone else thinks but in my eyes i was ripped off!

I agree that £240 to diagnose a fault and fit a small part is way too expensive but you must ask what the charges are in advance. We charge a fixed diagnostic fee so we would have charged £84 plus £20 for the part in our local area.

Again it sounds as if you may not have asked about the charge in advance.

Although its difficult to come to any conclusion based on what you have said, it sounds more likely that its overheating and I dont see an ignition electrode is likely to be the problem.

However, he was the man on the spot so let us know if it does fix the problem and what it costs.
