I have a Glow worm conventional gas boiler that is nearly 15 years old and has perfomed very well with only 2 repairs in all that time, the last one last Oct. when a small bird entered a broken flue pipe cover and jammed the fan, e-on engineer had never seen that before. Anyway we went out yesterday for the whole day, we switched off the CH but left the hot water to come on as usual. Got back last night and switched CH on and nothing! Light on the controller on the wall is lit. Boiler lights ok when hot water selected so boiler does work. Looked at mid position valve in airing cupboard and that stays on HW. Is the valve stuck and so boiler won't light or is electrical signal not getting through to the valve, or could it be something else? Any advice would be welcome.

It could be several things like the thermostat.

But its most likely to be the motor in the valve.

Hi Hugh- I don't know, can the valve be wedged to ch? It is only a plastic lever and I wouldn't like to try and force it down. Can it be done manually?

If you have a mid position valve there should be a lever at one end that will allow the valve to be set at mid position by moving it across fully and hooking in up into a recess.

The hot water and heating will then be driven from the cyclinder stat. Once that stat is satisfied hot water and heating will switch off. To keep heating on longer, turn up the cyclinder stat a bit (to 65) and keep having lots of baths.
