On an internal brick/block wall can a bonding coat of plaster be applied directly to the brick/block wall, or does the wall need a coat of sand and cement (mortar) first before applying the bonding coat? Thanks

Hardwall which comes in bags. It's a backing plaster for bricks. Straight on.

Bonding is similar but can go on thicker depth.

Sand and cement is harder when dry. Old way of doing it

So you're either sand and cement or hardwall

As a non plasterer I'd say that sc render in conjunction with screeds is a lot easier.

Out of curiosity, what were the benefits for plasterers of moving from sand and cement to hardwall?

Don't need a cement mixer with hardwall.
Easier to apply.
Faster to complete job as you can get straight on it with multi finish.
