The machine fills, the programmer can be heard clicking as normal, but the drum does not rotate, and no noise from the motor. In due course the machine drains, no wash having taken place. Any ideas?
 
Classic symptoms of worn carbon brushes in the motor. Check these first.

Thankyou sleepyhead, the brushes did the trick, we now have a fully serviceable, quiet machine.
£7 and a couple of hours well spent.
