Is there an "idiot proof" guide on how to do this somewhere, or even better, can it be purchased preformed.

It can be purchased pre-formed. I've seen it in PlumbCenter. Alternatively MDF makes good boxing - it can be glued and pinned together with an 18g brad nailer
