Brass & Copper Cleaning

I have inherited a couple of brass and copper plaques, which through age and lack of cleaning are blackened.
Any suggestions on the easiest way to clean and restore, other than elbow grease. Any chemical to do it?

Vinegar.... its what we used to shine up old pennies when i were a lad, lave them soak for half an hour at first. A mate of mine who fixes up old clocks uses Cilit Bang too
