What does the breaking capacity of a mcb refer to?? for example: a mcb with a breaking capacity of 6kA means what?

It means that if 6000A is flowing through the switch and you try to turn it off, it will still turn off rather than just explode.

In reality it would not be you turning it off. It would be turning itself off. The thing would melt anyway with 6000A going through it for any length of time. But if there is a short circuit it will still work to turn everything off safely with any current up to 6000A.

I think he is trying to say that it will safely break a fault current upto 6000amp with out exploding to peices and catching fire.

A fault current is the current that will flow under a fault condition such as a short circuit. This may well be thousands of amps, but in reality in a domestic install, will be much lower than 6000amp.

And in a ny case, on a domestic install, the REC bs88 or 1361 fuse will provide backup protection to te MCB's in the CU, so the breaking capacity can be ignored.
