Brick built door steps-gaps- Filling material OR repointing?

Hello DIY'ers

I have attached the pictures of my house's door steps. I think the steps are made with some decorative bricks.

I notice that there is gaps in all the joints ie between bricks. I do not see any evidence of any mortar being used to fill in. Am i right with my finding? I notice that these gaps have got mud where sometimes weeds are growing.

Can some one please help me to decide what i should be doing here to fill these gaps?

Should I be using klin sand to fill the gaps?

Kiln dried sand brushed into the joints is all you need to do.

If i use Klin dried sand, how will it stay inside at the edges and corners?


Do i need to treat the edges separately?

The risers are normally pointed joints.
