Buddy of mine wants a hand to build a couple of brick peers(piers?) to support a five bar wooden gate, they(the peers) are going to be around 6ft tall so pretty substantial,he is of the opinion that a "tower" 2 bricks by 2 bricks will suffice with nothing in the middle except a 9" square hole!I think we should be fillling that hole with something or the gate will just crack the joints when its opened and the full weight comes to bear...so who's right? any advice would be much apreciated...than you

Depends on the weight of the gate, really. However, it would be better to either use a steel post and brick around it, or concrete and rebar the centre void.

You need to give some thought to the footing as well: if that's inadequate, then the arrangement may well stay together, but be leaning at a daft angle.

It's pier btw.

Thanks for that shytalkz(just worked out your user name...very funny  ) yeah he's already done his "footings" although one day there was nothing then the next 2 small pads of concrete,he swears he dug down a good foot and filled it with crete but looking at the soil he's taken out I'd say it it was more like down a good 4-6 inches!
Time will tell I guess when it comes crashing down
