Doing a renovation, fireplace as a very old gas fire. Chimney backs onto next door.

It's for rental and as the property has central heating we usually install electric fires to save on yearly gas servicing costs.

If I brick up the opening, dry line the entire chimney with battens and pboard inc vapour barrier.

Anything else I need to do?

The insertion of an air-brick to allow air to circulate between the room and the top of the chimney. This will help stop moisture collecting in the soot and damp areas forming.

Cap the chimney with a ventilated cowl, this will allow air in and out, but not the rainwater.
