Bricklaying on tarmac?

If you were building some low brick planters (about 18" high) on tarmac would you take it up first or would it be ok for such a small structure? If it were sloped I assume you would have to take up the tarmac for fear of your planter sliding down the hill, in this case would you just take up the tarmac and compact some hardcore? Sorry about the stupid question. Cheers, Joe
 
Hi Joe, If you want them to last a few years, you should dig down about 6 inches at least and put a concrete raft in, a good foundation, level, to build up from.otherwise the tarmac will sag, and if on a slope will move and crack the brickwork.
