Hi I am having some block paving tidied up at the front. The builders have prepped the ground and I can see red brick below the damp course.

Is this normal? I thought the damp course would go down further?

Also any thoughts of drainage around here if I am having the block paving done? Was thinking of having the paving at a slight gradient away from the house would a.soakaway only allow the fluid to build up around the front?

Thank you

DPC generally 150mm above external ground level and at FFL. So looks about right.

Yes, slope away from house and if towards pavement you’ll need a linear drain at the junction and a soak away. Unless you use permeable paving…

Thanks for the clear advice Ronny,
Did you have any thoughts on the bad brickwork here ( zoomed in photo) , is this a problem? thanks

The bricks look like blue engineering bricks so should be fine below DPC. Has the damaged brick spalled or is it some other kind of damage?

At a guess I reckon there may have been an extension at some point which would explain the vertical joint rather than the stretcher bond elsewhere. Shouldn’t be an issue.

Yes your right it is part of an extension, it looks like it might have delaminated slightly on the front. I guess it will be covered with the paving. The blocks are concrete so I will make sure to have a slight gradient away from the house.

Thanks for the advice Ronnyraygun.
Photo shows finish which has set at a nice level.

Any thoughts on what do you with this area of soil to prevent it becoming waterlogged near to the house DPC?
Was going to cover with pebbles with over membrane. Does it need anything below the membrane to aid drainage?

Build a low wall in blue eng brick or an edging to cover that foundation, i'd use slate rather than pebbles, will blend in better, no harm in digging out a little more and using some pea gravel below the membrane.

Thanks for the good thoughts. How far below the dpc would you dig out to put the blue bricks. To be honest Edging might be easier? Would this be normal.perspex? Or is there is a specific product? Thanks

I meant the garden wall on the left, if the foundation is above ground level or the wall looks crap below the render, it will look unsightly if just left, use a low wall or edging to cover it and put slate or pebbles in the gap on top.
