britony 80 - heating not working

Hi, I have got a Britony 80 combi boiler. The hot water works perfectly but when we have extremes of cold the heating does not work. I have got a feeling it is the thermostat as when i play around with it for a length of time it occasionally works. Is there any way I can test this.
