Broken stair riser

I have a broken stair riser, and I just wondered if there was an easy fix for it, or whether I'll need a joiner in to sort it.

I've included some pics because I don't really know how to describe the break:

virtuly impossible to do a propper invisible job on top

dammit. the most annoying thing is that the underneath the stairs was open till about 3 weeks ago. Of course i still had carpet on the stairs so i had no idea.

Now the stairs have been boarded and plastered up

edit - oops sorry - I've just spotted theres a section dedicated to stairs! Sorry for posting in the wrong place.
