I’m in a solid-brick Victorian mid-terrace.
The previous window fitters did a pretty basic job and covered the edges of the uPVC windows with large plastic trims. I’ve removed those because I’d like to create a proper plastered window reveal instead
These openings originally had sash windows, so the replacement uPVC frames are quite a bit smaller than the original openings. There’s now roughly a 7 cm gap between the brickwork and the window frame, which the installers filled with expanding foam.
I’m trying to work out the best way to build this out and form a solid plastered reveal. Would you use insulated plasterboard over the foam-filled section, or would it be better to construct some sort of timber frame?
The existing brickwork also sits about 2 cm behind the finished plastered wall surface, and the window frame sits roughly 4 cm back from the finished internal wall face.
My current thought is to cut the foam back flat, use insulation/PIR or insulated plasterboard to build out the deeper void, and then make up the smaller difference over the brickwork before plastering everything flush.
Does that sound sensible, or is there a better/simpler way to deal with an old sash-box opening like this?
