Hi
I am trying to find Building Control Regs that apply to adult bunk beds - for a single bunk bed in a 6.5 sq mt floor bedroom with a ceiling height of 2.5 mt, I am particularly interested to know any head height requirement from mattress to the ceiling.

This post:
http://www.diydoctor.org.uk/forums/bed-decks-in-loft-space-building-regulations-t26531.html
suggests:
'galleries' in Approved Document B Vol1 of the bg regs, (page 21):
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploa...chment_data/file/485420/BR_PDF_AD_B1_2013.pdf
But it is Fire Related.

There is this act:
http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1987/1337/introduction/made
but that is more concerned with gaps in rails - and entrapment (where small children are using).

And a BS:
https://shop.bsigroup.com/ProductDetail/?pid=000000000030287380
But again seems to be concerned with ready made bunk beds you might self assemble - or have delivered - I will be making this bunk bed bespoke.

Any one have any pointers.
Thanks

Building regs are for building the house, not the furniture in it.

However, it wouldn't be a bad idea to look at the rules for banister rails -/ spindles and steps/ ladders
Avoid the opportunity to Miss steps or get their head stick in a rail.

Common sense says that someone should be able to sit up without braining themselves

You’re thinking of part N1 of the building regs: adult bunk beds (residential), not to be confused with part N2: adult bunk beds (non-residential)

I was thinking of part MFI, but that got withdrawn in 2008.

I think the last sentence here covers all you need to know.

I did wonder :) - its good news then, no BC requirements, surprised though - looking to build in a fitted 'bunk bed' (not demountable) which I was worried could technically be seen as part of the building, a structure which has steps, needs head height, and should support weight.
Thanks for the thought though ...

Blimey - don't start giving the 'authorities' ideas, next you'll want regulations for built in wardrobes, understairs cupboards, larders and shelves!

Well as internet access is now stupidly a building regulation issue with Part R, it could be bedroom furniture next - especially for IKEA stuff which has killed more people than internet cable.

"Blimey - don't start giving the 'authorities' ideas - " - HMRC take this view, if you cant physically lift it it up and remove it then its viewed as part of the building, so a wall mounted boiler is part of the building, but removable curtains are not - but if they are the type of curtain that doesn't use curtain hooks and can't be removed from the rail so easily - then they are viewed as being part of the building. However HMRC claim there is no definitive list or definition of what makes something integral to the building.

"Well as internet access is now stupidly a building regulation issue with Part R" - that is daft, surely most 'block builders' include all that, and conversions or new build I would have thought it not difficult for your service provider to install the 'one' access point required ... depending on your 'service provider' of course:
