Cable for downlighters

Hi Folks, I need to fit 4 240v downlighters, I've not fiited any before so sorry if this is a dumb question. Can I use 1.5mm T&E to connect to the connecting block on the light or do I need heat resitant flex (and then connect via a junction box to 1.5mm T&E) as I know there are some issues with heat from these lights which? Whoops!! I've connected mine directly to the 1.5mm T&E. Is this ilegal, against the Regs, dangerous - all of the above??
