Cat 5 or Cat 6 cable is OK too. The spec. is well OTT for normal telephone needs, but it is often use in structured wiring environments where the same sockets can be used for telephony or data.
Alarm cable is not suitable as it is not twisted pair, and the stranded conductors are not suited to the IDC terminations in phone sockets.
