Would cables inside a cavity fail part P , or is it ok but generally considered bad practice ??

Are you talking about the cavity between internal and external walls?

If so, it's not allowed.

The air gap between bricks is there to prevent damp, cabling in the air gap will:-

Bridge the brick courses potentially allowing damp / moisture problems
Not be able to be supported
Could have issues if cavity insulation is installed later

Not sure if it's a reg, if so more likely a Building reg

Thats interesting, because im doing a rewire at my mums house next month and currently the supply comes up through the cavety and from consumer cables go up through cavety to loft (bungalow)

The property is about 40 years old maybe more, currently the consumer (old wylex) is fitted inside interior wall, behind you can see in cavety and exterior wall, bit windy shall we say!!

wondered myself if this is compliant these days?

OSG Says...
p.94 Ref. pvc cable, Ok for, amongst other things :-
(i) general indoor use in dry or damp locations ...

(v) In building voids or ducts formed in situ.

P.100 Ref Methods of Support.
7. Sheathed cable without armour in vertical runs which are inaccessable and unlikely to be disturbed supported by the method described in item 6 above; length of run without intermediate support not exceeding 2 M for lead sheathed cable or 5 M for a thermosetting or thermoplastic sheathed cable
Item 6 requires support at the top of the run by clip and rounded support of suitable radius..

Almost shouts leaf cavity doesn't it? But that may well not be the case.
I thought it was quite relevant tho'.
:D

5m is probablly not enough to go from under ground floor up to the loft which seems to be the main thing the cavity is used for at least in our house.

My house built in 1964 is the same, and I know of others that are too. That was probably the way things were done then, although my cables enter a clay pipe inside the cavity about 6" above the CU.
