My son starts at Uni in a couple of weeks. He has an 8 month old Acer laptop with a 40gb hd. Needless to say, it is fairly full with non-academic items. Can I use an external hd thro' a USB2 port to extend what he has? Is it an easy job replacing the existing hd with a larger (capacity) one?

If you have a USB2 port, the external drive is pretty much plug in and go.

Replacing the drive is generally straight forward on modern laptops. They normally sit behind a removable plate, held by one or two screws, although some sit under the keyboard. It's probably worth removing the old drive first to ensure that the new drive will physically fit.

Does he know Backup, Restore and Off-site Storage for when his laptop is stolen?
