Hi,

Can anyone identify the wood these early 80's kitchen cabinets are made from?

They were in the house when we bought it, solid wood just really minging and dilapidated.

Once the rest of the house is done I'm hoping to make a bench or coffee table from the wood.

The end grain is a fresh cut, when sawn/drilled the sawdust is the red colour shown.

From my googling I'm thinking cherry or mahogany?

I doubt it is genuine Mahogany I think importation has been banned for some time and too expensive for kitchen units.
My guess would be sapelle or maybe cherry as you suggest.

OK great, thanks for the info:D

Are there any other methods of distinguishing/narrowing it down further?

My first thought - 'Iroko'.

However, have a look at this website and take a sample to them when they reopen to see if they can give you proper guidance.
