I have an overhead box that contains the kitchen extractor. It is formed from plasterboard.

The join between the ceiling and the box was simply sealed with caulk. It cracked quite quickly. The plasterer says it just requires more caulk. I am concerned that he does this and by the time it cracks again he is long gone.

Will this work or does it have to be taped with gauze or paper tape?

Yes.

I find even flexible caulk cracks, but perhaps there are better brands.

Taping the joins is the proper way to do it, it wont crack after taping.
