Can I paint a marble hearth?

Can any tell me if I can paint the marble around my gas fire and hearth or can I buy black panels that would go over to cover the marble?

I painted my gas fire surround some months ago in emulsion and it did the trick really well. It brought an old dated fire into the 21st Century.

It has however, now been ripped out this morning!
