Can I remove these bricks in my fireplace?

We’ve removed our existing fireplace and opened up this bricked up area. It looks like these bricks below the lintel are being held up with a bit of a hope and a prayer. Am I able to remove them without the whole chimney breast collapsing?

If that is a lintel then yes, and if its not stand back

Certainly looks like the original lintel so, yes, you can remove all the bits below it but make sure you leave it resting securely on the two bricks it is on.
