I have had a gas fire removed and now have a chimney breast with a space in where I am going to get a gas fired wood burner fitted with a conventional flue. In order for this to fit I need to make the fireplace deeper. The lintel is in place so can I remove bricks underneath this at the back of the fireplace will the lintel still be supported from the sides? Many thanks in advance for any help!
