Hi,

We have a chimney breast with 2 flues. 1 for the fireplace and another for the Oil-fired boiler.

We want to replace our old fireplace with a multifuel stove.

We've found that the existing space is too small so want to knock down the bottom section of the brickwall dividing the 2 flues and brick up the flue for the Boiler at 1m height as the pipe for the boiler only enters the flue at 1.4 m.

Now we obviously need to support the wall dividing the 2 flues (since we've knocked the bottom metre off it) with a Lintel.

The only way I can see that it would work would be to sit this lintel on top of the Fireplace lintel on 1 side (and into the brickwork on the other side).

I've had a building inspector round and he made positive noises ... it'll need a building notice etc...

My question is simply this, is it acceptable to use 1 lintel as the support for 1 side of another lintel? The 2 lintels will be perpendicular to each other. It's not the side chimney breast wall that i'm talking about but the internal wall separating the 2 chimeny flues inside the chimney breast.

Thanks!
Dave.
