Just moved into my first house, we are hopefully going to insulate the loft in time for winter.
I started taking up some of the boards in the loft and noticed this 'beading' there approx ~ 5mm square and cover the loft.
Does anyone know what it is?

Looks like vermiculite.
Was popular back in the 70's used it on my first house just over the landing ceiling where it was fiddly to cut wool.

Now the bad news, while most vermiculite is asbestos free, some was mined from the same type of mine as asbestos was so slight contamination is possible.
Not considered a major problem as only some has a slight contamination and it is often sold in garden centres as a plant growing medium modern stuff should of course be completely safe.
Just be aware leave it alone and take precautions if you have to disturb it, don't panic, just do a bit of research on line to be informed of the facts. The risk should be minimal especially if you treat it sensibly.
