Can you varnish over blackboard paint.

My son has a small cabinet printed with matt back paint but needs it protected.

Can he (I) varnish over this.

If so, is an oil based or water based varnish better?

A light sanding and a coat of water based varnish should be fine. Oil based varnish actually gives a yellowish tinge to what ever your painting. Should be ok.

if you wish to have the ability to still chalk on the surface then mask off areas away from wear areas and be aware they will be matt
