Good choice of forum to post in.
Does the solidified wax not just 'pick' off if you get your finger nail under it?
Or maybe crease/squeeze/fold hte leather between your fingers to see if the wax will crack off?

Cover it with brown paper and use a warm iron. Then just peel it off.
