Am trying to replace an external PIR/light. the cable going to it is 4 core - red, blue, yellow and unsheathed earth.
The old PIR was no help, it used white cable for a start.
Have looked in the switch arrangement, it is a double switch, the other switch for a kitchen light both COM terminals are connected.

From what I can see, the yellow has a bit of red tape and is currently in L1. The red from the external cable is fed from COM. The neutral, blue, is connected with several other blue.black cables. The earth as expected, joined at the back of the switch box.

Am GUESSING that the yellow might have to be joined inthe new PIR with the blue, the red being live - is this completely wrong?

The red would be permenant line.
The yellow would be switched line.
The blue would be Neutral.

Red will feed the sensor, yellow will feed the lamp directly (override)

Do not connect yellow to blue !

Blue obviously to Neutral terminal.

thanks ricicle but still not clear..

the light has 3 standard cables in the block - brown, blue & earth, it sounds like I have to use all 4 of mine but which goes to which? instructions state earth MUST be used

At a guess, your conductors are wired as ricicle suggests, ie you have a permanent feed, a switched output and a neutral, but your light fitting appears not to have a PIR.

If you wish to connect the fitting so as to be controlled by the internal switch, ignore the permanent feed (otherwise the light will be on all the time). Use the blue & yellow & earth.

red into a terminal block, yellow as the L, blue as the N and earth as the earth..

could be that the PIR is integrated and not a bit stuck on the bottom as are most PIR TH floods.. they use an extra terminal block in the connection box to join the switched wire from the PIR to the wire from the light..
