capping fascia

Any advice welcome.

Been looking at fitting new fascia boards to my garage. When looking at upvc sites most 9/10mm capping has an internal lip of about 28mm and they recommend using 22mm wooden boards behind. What am I missing, because to me that will leave about 6mm gap. What am I misunderstanding?

The lip is to pick the soffit board up. Buy flat capping board instead. Be sure if you cap over existing fascia its not going to rob too much off the overhang of the tile .
