Car engine cutting out...

Wonder if anyone can help..

I've got a peugeot 106 xl independence and its started to cut out the engine at odd times... again... but mostly when i go to brake and then put clutch down to change gear down for a junction, lights or turning. Don't whether a coincidence but it seems to do this after shorter journeys of starting and stopping... i.e. go to shops(so stop), then go somewhere else etc. When i just use it for long journeys to work or out where my car gets to sit there for at least a few hrs it doesn't seem to mind and doesn't seem to cut out. As said that might be coincidence. Just think it weird- it happened a while bk but then stopped (i had clutch all checked out cause i thought it was me!) and now its started again.
I do check oil and water regularly and fill up with petrol regularly too.

Any ideas? It would be good to know if possible.
Worry i have is if it suddenly cuts out when i got someone up my tail! lol.
have started to put warning lights on as soon as it happens and hope it never happens on a A rd!

Did you recently let the fuel level get very low? Could be grot in the carb.

Does this model have a breakless type of distributor (as opposed to fully electronic ignition) with a hall effect sensor? These can go intermittently faulty.

When it cuts out, how do you get it to restart? Does it start right away or need a bit of a rest?
 
I would have thought the 106 would be fuel injected?

Get a can of carb cleaner (aerosol) and clean the idle speed control valve, that normall solves idle problems on injected engines.

Ensure no flexy pipes have come adrift in the area beneath / around the inlet manifold and air intake ... Long shot, but could cause the cutting out problems at tickover..

Er... i let the level go low on the odd occasion so i can fill it up completely before a hectic week. but tend to refill it at 1/8 of tank approx. (although think my guage says less than there really is but i don't mind- be on safe side.)
Sorry i not v mechanically minded but get by... what is a 'breakless type of distributor?'
To restart i just put handbrake on and it pretty much starts straight away but i have to keep up revs for a while after otherwise it can go again.

No idea if its fuel injected... where would i find an idle speed control valve?
Last time i took it to garage and they checked idle control and said it was fine- it did it again not long after that visit!

Ohhh..... mentioning pipes- the, i think its like an air type control pipe, came off the other day -i noticed when checking oil- and i put it back on... maybe i'd better check that when the engines cooled down.. see if its that.

I'm not familiar with the Pug 106 layout but assuming you can find the air intake (a pipe where the engine inhales) we should be able to sort this. Follow the air intake, it should go to a bigish box which will be the air cleaner and then onto a metal chunk with a cable from the accelerator (get someone inside to press the accelerator and you should see movement under the bonnet). This chunk of metal is the throttle body. Unclip the pipework from one side of it and spray some carb cleaner in there, brush it with an old toothbrush (or your better halfs if she's not looking) while holding the metal plate open (put a brick on the accelerator. Thats the first bit done. The engine control unit needs to be able to raise and lower the idle, it has direct control of the petrol via the injector, the next bit controls the air, if it's putting more petrol in to raise the idle it needs more air. If you look at the throttle body that you've just cleaned there should be a smaller pipe from the air cleaner to the engine side of the throttle body, remove the pipe and clean inside the valve with the carb cleaner.
Sounds complicated, literally takes only a few minutes to do and in 90% of cases cures the problem.

Think that'll be easier to understand when actually at the car with bonnet open- so i'll have look at weekend when car will be cooler and not always needed lol.
I can get carb cleaner from any motor type store i guess? Is there certain ones for individual makes etc?

p.s. lol.- like the toothbrush idea....
 
Carb cleaner aerosol from halfrauds or similar, if you could take some pictures of the general underbonnet layout I could probably highlight the items for you.
