carpet cleaning

I have recently had a carpet fitted and when the fitters left they left a mark the full width of the hearth. I suspect it is soot I have hoovered it up but it has still left a mark. The carpet is light in colour and I don,t want to use anything on it that could make it worse. Please help.

Cal lthe company that fitted it and get them to come back and clean it.
