Carpet Laying without Skirting Boards!!!!!

Please help i am attempting (for the 1st time).....to lay carpet, however not a straight forward job as its to a cottage room and the walls are far from straight, hence the walls do not have skirting and there is no way skirting could be fitted....So i have the underlay, carpet, grippers etc....but can someone give me an idea of how to finish off the edges so they do not fray etc.......
