I bought an old cast iron fireplace. I am having it sandblasted this week. I don't want to have it blacked and I don't want to pay out to have it polished. Is there an alternative? Are there any products I can buy to paint or spray onto the surface to stop it oxidising and going rusty again?

If you look at the websites of quality wood burning stoves (Morso etc) you'll see that they do supply paint aerosols and presumably these are as heat resistant as you can get.
An alternative could be car manifold paint, I guess.
Expect a steady pong for a few weeks after painting!
John :)
