Hi,

I have an Audi A4 (1999) with a loud rattle that seems to come from the front end of the exhaust- probably worse on starting but does come intermittantly whilst driving along.
My hubby has taken it to a garage they have said it's the catalyst and just the part alone is £200.
Is it likely to be this and is the cost about right?
Just don't wanna be ripped off. :(

Thanks for any advice.

New catalytic converters are expensive due to the fact they contain precious metals such as platinum and rhodium etc, £200 is cheap !

a main dealer part may be expensive but have a look somewhere like gsf car parts, you may be suprised how cheap they are now, bought one for a citroen recently and it was under £100

saw it on how its made, they did say it was platinium in them.

but if it rattles is it not something loose?

the ones on how its made didnt have anything inside that could come loose, perhaps the place you went just said it was the cat?

try some where else for a 2nd opinion

The inside of the Cat contains a honeycomb brick, this can break up and it is this that is rattling.

Replacement is the only option.

Motor factors may sell cheaper options eg: Bosal or Walker.
However £200 for a Cat particularly on an Audi is right on the money.
