We just got through setting tile in over 1700 sq feet of our home. Quarter round was put down to cover the gap between the baseboards and tile. Now we wanted to apply caulk between the quarter round and tile, so it looks finished off and sealed. But, when we try to smooth the bead of caulk, it smears into the grout when it hits a grout line. It looks just awful and we're not sure how to finish the job. Any advice is appreciated. We have tried both water based and silicone caulk.

Your best option, when you have cleaned off the old silicone, is to use painting tape along the line of tiles, making sure it sticks down tightly onto the grout as you go. Once it is all stuck down you can then re-seal, and smooth down to the desired effect.

When you smoothed the silicone down before, did you use some washing up liquid diluted in water? .....as this helps get a good even shape.

Hope it helps, all the best......simon.
