Ceiling Brackets

I have an overhead projector, which up until now, I’ve had on a stand. But, recently decided it would be great on a bracket, attached to the ceiling. I therefore bought myself the said bracket, attached it to the projector, thinking myself very clever. Then quickly realized I’m not; the ceiling is weak and brittle in the place I want to put the bracket, and hollow too.

Any real clever folk got any thoughts?

I`m no builder but I think you will find a joist up there somewhere, I think they are about 16" apart. I would take a floorboard up near to where you want the bracket & put a small marking hole through the ceiling & go from there.

Can you accept a plate on the ceiling ?

A piece of timber fitted below the ceiling and screwed to two joists will provide a secure fixing for the projector.

Otherwise it is case of removing the floor board and fitting a support between two joists to screw the bracket into. You may have to do that anyway to get power to the projector.

Thanks for your replies. I did forget to mention something rather important though, when I posted at 6:30 this morning: I live on the top floor of a block of flats, with a flat roof. I cannot directly access any joists, or anything above the ceiling. The ceiling itself it plasterboard. I’ll be routing the two cables through trunking along the edges of the walls.

In which case you will have to fit the bracket where there is a joist or use the plate bridging between two joists if you must have the projector positioned between joists.

For the plate you could look at a solid wood drawer front that is long enough to reach the two joists. A ready made decor feature without the work.

Yes, unfortunately, it does have to be in a very specific place, which I know, doesn’t help matters. Nice idea about the drawer front, I’ll give that a go. Thanks.
