Hello

I need some help. I have replaced the ceiling base for a larger one and in so doing dismantled the light fitting. I wrote down the positions of the wires in the ceiling rose and when fitting it back the light does not come on.
There are three cables involved and each cable has a black and red wire. One cable has the red wire cut back to the flex and is not insulated. When I recorded the positions of the wires I wrote down two red wires only and on the internet I beleive all three red wires should be in use. Is that right?

So in the rose there terminals like this

xxx xxx xx

1 blue
2 and 3 black
4 and 5 red
7 and 8 black

What cables do you have at the switch? (Power OFF before loosening from wall to have a look!!)

EDIT!!! And where is this light? Landing?

Hello scoby

Great name.

The light is in the lounge downstairs.

The panel switch on the wall has two switches. One for the ceiling light and one for two wall lights. Inside the panel switch the one cable flex has four core. An earth (yellow/green), red, blue and yellow wires.

Steve

A little confused.
*You have three cables each with a red and black conductor
* so please explain this
123 456 78
xxx xxx xx

1 blue
2 and 3 black
4 and 5 red
7 and 8 black

any earth/cpc cables, are the fittings metal?

Yes three cables each with a black and red conductor.

In the ceiling rose is a plastic bloc with 8 terminals. Position 1(blue) and 8 (brown) are associated with the lightbulb.

2 and 3 have black wires
4 and 5 red wires
and 7 is black

Does that help?

Yes one earth terminal in ceiling rose, and one in the wall switch terminal on the back plate.

Pound to a penny the single black is the switch return without the red/brown sleeving. In that case connect to position 8

I never removed the conductors in postion 1 and 8. 8 is the brown lead to the bulb. So I can't replace it with your suggested black.

You do realise that

1,2 & 3 are the same piece of metal and
4,5 & 6 are the same piece of metal and
7 & 8 are the same piece of metal

don't you?

Yes, I put spaces between my x's like xxx xxx xx in my first message to the forum.[/list]

It would appear that it is wired correctly (although it is strange that one of the reds is cut).

Make sure that all the wires are making good contact and that

one hasn't snapped off or

a screw is not on the insulation.

Ok. It's strange about this cut red wire. I will leave it as is then. I thought the other problem was which black wire connects to terminal 7. There are three of them and exactly the same. No marking to denote the wall switch feed. I tried each black to terminal 7 but still did not work.

You should not have done that.

One should be the switched live. The other two Neutrals - not feed to wall.

Do you have fuses? You may have blown it (the fuse that is) and/or the switch.

What did you do with the other two blacks when trying one in no.7?

The fuse did trip once. It's back up now. There are no fuses as such to blow. IT just tripped. The other two blacks were connected to terminals 2 and 3 when I connected one black to 7.
