House approx 1925. Brick built.

After the very heavy rains of the summer my cellar started
collecting water. Initially I had 1 inch of water down there.
It now seems to be collecting water on a regular basis.
So with the heavy rains of today I now have a quarter of an inch down
there.

I am guessing the water is seeping through the brickwork.

Questions
1. How do I stop it? I have heard the name tanking but what does
this involve.
2. The cellar isn't used for anything is there some plastic/rubber
application that I can paint on the walls to seal the brickwork again?
3. What products should I use?

Speaking from personal experience, I lived in an old Victorian house within a high water table area. The cellar was wet, but controlled by an automatic pump set in a gulley in one corner. This worked for us. I did consider tanking the cellar but the cost outlay and the fact that the damp could spread to other areas put me off. That being said our problem was caused by the environment and nature of the area, something we knew about when we took the house on, if yours is fairly recent then you may need to investigate further.
