We live in a 4 storey house with gas central heating and hot water. Vaillant boiler is in garage but hot water tank is in airing cupboard on top floor.

This week we have noticed that when the system is set to heat rads and heat hot water tank the rads do not heat up. When hot water goes off then rads heat up as expected.

At start of week I noticed that rads on top floor were not hot at all so bled them and got a lot of air out. Now when heating is switched on there is an awful lot of gurgling and rads at top of house are only hot at bottom indicating still more air in them. Also the hot water tank does not heat up at all with rads on - even when turning heating off the hot water tank does not seem to get as hot as it should.

Any thoughts please.

Perhaps one of the Vaillant lads can tell us how many different Vaillants were made

Then the rest of us can guess how many different system configurations there can be

What control valves do you have? Is it open vented or sealed?

Give us a clue dude.

Sorry - it is a sealed system - Ecotec condensing boiler. All controlled by a timer in airing cupboard. It can have both heating and hot water on at same time or either one individually. Seems to go particularly wrong when both are on as neither rads or hot water get more than warm.

after you bled rads did you remember to top up pressure again ?
you should bleed downstairs rads first then upstairs

Hi Parcival,

Check the pressure in the system, when you're releasing air from the system it needs to be replaced with water to re pressurise.

:D
