Got a problem with my central heating not sure if I need a plumber or a heating engineer.
Yesterday the heating downstairs wouldn't switch off, upstairs seems ok,
I have timed digital thermostats upstairs and downstairs and run my heating on continuous mode.
The thermostat shows a pilot light if the boiler should be on but it was off.
The only way I could get the boiler to switch off was by setting the boiler heating controls to off.
The hot water settings were on but the boiler did switch off after I set the heating controls to off so I'm guessing it's heating related and not hot water.
I took the batteries out of the thermostat which normally cuts the boiler but that didn't work so I'm guessing it's not a thermostat fault.
I have identical thermostats upstairs and downstairs so I suppose I could swap them over to see if the problem goes upstairs.
Some googling has suggested the 3 port valve (diverter valve) maybe be stuck on open.
In my airing cupboard I have 3 Honeywell valves.
F8-9646 which leads to the hot water cylinder
and two other valves
F8-9646 and F6-9636 (I don't know where they lead)
Also recently I've been hearing a clunking noise occasionally. I'm sure I've heard it just before the boiler has been switching off don't know if it's related.
I have an oil boiler (Camray Quartet) if that's relevant.
This morning I switched on the central heating at the boiler controls.
It fired up and then switched off once the room stat reached the correct
temperature.
Does this mean I have a sticky valve?
How do I diagnose what needs fixing?
Thanks for any help.
