...are not thermostats.

Papageno it sounds like it IS sludge. Also it could be that the rotor of the pump is blocked, or did you check that?

Sorry ChrisR, didn't mean to ignore you on your last comment. When I had the pump out I gave it a good flushing out but no sign of the 'dreaded' sludge. I think the root cause was this verdigreed union which I replaced. It is still working fine, apart from this thermosat query but at least I can live with that for the moment- just wind it right up.
