Thanks for that Martyc - have priced a replacement unit and they are about £50 so your suggestion is worth a try - Thanks, Brian
Sorry ChrisR, didn't mean to ignore you on your last comment. When I had the pump out I gave it a good flushing out but no sign of the 'dreaded' sludge. I think the root cause was this verdigreed union which I replaced. It is still working fine, apart from this thermosat query but at least I can live with that for the moment- just wind it right up.
