We been suffering from some early morning banging and clattering lately from the heating ( pump I thought) ,actually any time it started up I think but most noticable in the quiet of the morning. Also noticed that the lounge rad was taking longer to get hot than normal, thats just the
one you sit closest too so could have been others too.

Drained system down, changed over a TRV from return to flow cos it was often noisy, refilled system but now unable to get any heat in downstais rads. bled everything, still nothing, went round this cycle at least 4 times.

Upstairs rad and hot water all ok

donwstairs rads fill up ok, since opening bleed on one you can hear air being expeled, then water as you refill.

Pump is making the normal pumping type sound, plus can hear swirling etc if you change pump speed.

Removed rad in kitchen, squirted hose down flow pipe seems to come out of drain points.

Had drained down a few years ago when I fitted TRV's, don't remember having any problems with airlocks etc when filling that time

Tried to backfill via drain points, but those point leaks more water via the thread than seems to go in

Can't decide if perhaps pump has lost umph and can no longer provide enough power to push it downstairs Or some fundamental blockage betwen upstairs and downstairs

sytem is a normal boiler, with pump and header tank in loft, 2 port value to split hot water and or heating
Everyting seems to be working except no heat (flow) in downstair rads, pump making right sort of noises, 2 port valve moving ok

What would your money be on pump or blockage ?

Put pump on max setting and turn OFF all the upstairs rads.

This should force the flow into the downstairs rads and they may need bleeding as you may have air in the system.

Last, set the lockshield valves up stairs say half a turn on and the system should then work.

If you can you could fine tune the balalcing, look if FAQ section.

Thats sorted it (havent done the lockshield thing or balanceing yet)

THANKS VERY MUCH

I have to admit to already fittting a new pump today - which didn't fix it !, just hope it has some effect on the noise to justify its existance
