I notice that two of the MCBs (second and third from the right) have three red wires going into them. So that's 2 for the ring, and one for the......?

I have occasionally seen where people have added an extra socket or other appliance in that way to avoid installing an extra MCB, but I'm sure it's not right.

No John, it is ok to take a spur off the breaker as it is regarded the same as off a socket outlet.

You can spur off the MCB, but it must follow the same rules as a spur anywhere else on the ring final circuit (eg. only supplying one outlet unless run through an FCU)
