Chimney balloons

if you block off the chimney vent air cannot circulate to keep it dry and you may get damp problems through your bedroom/ livingroom walls.

air has to circulate through chimney flues to keep the moisture at bay, if you block it off at the bottom with a baloon or any other method you no longer have air circulation, even more so if the chimneyhead is uncapped.

Chimney balloons are rounded at one end to allow for ventilation of hot and cold air through the chimney. They are not needed in the warmer months and can be packed away flat for reuse when the weather turns colder. AND they are only about £25 :)

(I am in no way affiliated with sales of chimney balloons)

Chimney balloons should never be used.

A couple I know took the chimney balloon advice and used a party balloon instead.
It plugged the chimney for a few days and then deflated slightly and floated to the top and stuck below the bird guard.

The home owners then lit the open fire and left it until they noticed the room was full of black smoke and belching out through a window.

Even though they started panicking one of them had the presence of mind to grab an air rifle and shoot the balloon.
