Why do products that use rubber and come from China have such a strong smell? I didn't notice the same thing with products other than car tyres a few years ago.

Garlic and five spice.

I'd assume it is to do with the quality of the rubber. The higher the quality the less reactive (or more inert) the compound will be?

I'm sure someone will be able to prove I'm talking rollocks but it sounds good for now.

Just a guess.

We used to use rubber hose on our fire extinguishers but changed to pvc because the rubber ones perished quickly. However, we were sent some samples of new rubber hoses from China last week and they stink to high Heaven. Usually you get that smell when the rubber has been poorly processed - it's to do with it not curing properly.

We had a new rubber / hessian braided conveyor belt installed at work a few months ago, and it stank to high heaven for a week or so afterwards. Smelt almost like off milk, but very strong. :|
