Hi all,

I wonder if any of you could offer advice as the best adhesive to use for a project I am carrying out at home. I'm replacing my open fire with a multi fuel stove and want to clad the builders opening with some old York Stone roof slates. Each slate is approximately 600mm x 1000mm and 20-25mm thick. The stone face is a little sandy so I need to take this in to account.

I am unsure as to how to adhere the slates to the brickwork. I need to make sure that the heat produced does not affect the adhesion ability, can I just go ahead and use mortar? I'm hoping some of you experienced guys (or gals) may be able to make a suggestion.

Yours,

Mark

Bal do a great range of adhesives. I used them for the same application. Although i had indian sandstone.

You need a flexibale and high temp resistant adhesive. I only use self mix stuff as i dont trust the consistancy of the pre mixed tubs - often dries out too qucik and gives a weak bond IMO. Also I lined the opening out with 6mm Hardy Backer board first. Not sure why i felt the need, probably so I had a clean surface to bond my stone to.

I bonded the backer board on with the same Bal product, but also screwed and plugged it to make sure it was held fast and flat. I drilled it off first and fitted plugs, before slapping adhesive on and the screwing it on, leveleing it off as i went along by tweaking the screws where required.

3 years on (touch wood) no movementat all, and I heat my stove pretty hot to my wifes discomfort!

Thanks Domdee, much appreciated, I shall follow suit (all be it without the Backerboard).
